How many drops of essential oil in a diffuser
Enter your diffuser's tank size and the room it sits in, and get a drop count, a blend split and how long to run it. It is made for ultrasonic diffusers that mix oil with water.
| Drops in total | 8 |
|---|---|
| Quiet evening blend | Lavender 5, Cedarwood (Atlas) 3 |
| How long | 30 to 60 minutes on, then off for at least as long |
| Air | Keep a door or window slightly open. |
| Tank | light | standard | strong |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 ml | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 150 ml | 5 | 6 | 8 |
| 200 ml | 6 | 8 | 10 |
| 300 ml | 9 | 12 | 15 |
| 400 ml | 12 | 15 | 15 |
| 500 ml | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| Blend | Oils | When |
|---|---|---|
| Bright morning | Sweet orange 2 : Rosemary 1 | Kitchen or desk, first thing |
| Quiet evening | Lavender 2 : Cedarwood (Atlas) 1 | Living room, an hour before bed |
| Fresh air | Lemon 1 : Eucalyptus 1 : Lavender 1 | After cooking, windows open |
| Japanese forest | Hinoki 2 : Yuzu 1 | Bathroom or hallway |
How to use it
Fill in four things:
- Tank size, in milliliters, as given in the manual. If you fill it only partway, enter the water you actually put in.
- Room: small (up to about 10 square meters, or 110 sq ft), medium, or large (over about 25 square meters, or 270 sq ft).
- Strength: light, standard or strong.
- The box for babies, someone with asthma, or pets in the home. Tick it if any of them apply.
You get the number of drops, a split for the blend you pick, and how long to run the diffuser. The print button prints your result and the chart, so you can tape it inside a cupboard door near the diffuser.
How the numbers work
Maker instructions for ultrasonic diffusers usually say 3 to 5 drops of essential oil per 100 ml of water. The calculator takes that range and adjusts it for the room.
| Setting | Rule |
|---|---|
| Light | 3 drops per 100 ml |
| Standard | 4 drops per 100 ml |
| Strong | 5 drops per 100 ml |
| Small room | multiply by 0.75 |
| Medium room | no change |
| Large room | multiply by 1.25 |
| Result | rounded to a whole drop, at least 1, never more than 15 |
| Sensitive-household box | light strength and no more than 6 drops |
The cap of 15 stops a large tank from turning into a heavy dose of oil in the air.
Every result comes with the same running advice. Run the diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes, then switch it off for at least as long. Keep a door or window open. Never diffuse in a closed room with a cat, a bird or a young baby. This on-and-off pattern follows the guidance on intermittent diffusing from the Tisserand Institute.
Nebulizing (waterless) diffusers are different. They spray neat oil straight from the bottle and run on a timer, so drop counts do not apply to them.
The four blends are given in parts, so they scale to any drop count:
| Blend | Oils (parts) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Bright morning | sweet orange 2, rosemary 1 | Kitchen or desk, first thing |
| Quiet evening | lavender 2, Atlas cedarwood 1 | Living room, an hour before bed |
| Fresh air | lemon 1, eucalyptus 1, lavender 1 | After cooking, windows open |
| Japanese forest | hinoki (Japanese cypress) 2, yuzu (a Japanese citrus) 1 | Bathroom or hallway |
If you want to build your own, the guide to which oils blend well is a good place to start.
A worked example
Your diffuser holds 200 ml and sits in a medium living room. At standard strength, that is 200 divided by 100, times 4 drops: 8 drops. Choose Quiet evening, and the 2 : 1 split gives 5 drops of lavender and 3 of Atlas cedarwood. The parts always add up to the total, with the leftover drop going to the oil that was closest to the next whole drop.
A 300 ml tank on strong in a large room works out at 3 times 5 times 1.25, which is 18.75. That rounds to 19, so the calculator shows 15, the cap.
Tick the sensitive-household box for that same tank and room, and the strength drops to light. The math gives 11, and the box limits it to 6 drops.
What it can't tell you
Diffusers differ in how much mist they put out, and people differ in how much scent they can take. Treat the number as a ceiling. If the room smells strong after a few minutes, use fewer drops next time.
Switch off and open a window if anyone coughs, wheezes, gets a headache or has stinging eyes. Before diffusing near someone with asthma, ask their doctor. Talk to a midwife or doctor first in pregnancy, and check each oil for children and pets in the essential oil safety chart: rosemary and eucalyptus are not suitable for everyone, and citrus oils, yuzu included, are a problem for cats.
Pets need their own care. Cats, birds and small caged animals are more sensitive than we are, and an animal should always be able to leave a scented room. Never put oils on a pet. If an animal drools, vomits, wobbles or breathes fast after diffusing, switch off, get it into fresh air and call your vet. Questions
How many drops of essential oil in a 100 ml diffuser?
In a medium room: 3 drops for light, 4 for standard and 5 for strong. In a small room the calculator gives 2, 3 and 4; in a large room, 4, 5 and 6.
How many drops go in a 300 ml or 400 ml diffuser?
At standard strength in a medium room, 300 ml gives 12 drops. A 400 ml tank works out at 16, so the calculator shows the cap of 15.
How long should you run a diffuser?
For 30 to 60 minutes at a time, then off for at least as long, with a door or window open. Leaving it on all day or all night is not a good idea.
What are some easy essential oil diffuser recipes?
The four blends above: Bright morning, Quiet evening, Fresh air and Japanese forest. Enter your tank size, pick one, and the calculator splits the drops for you.
Can I use a diffuser with pets in the house?
Briefly, with care. Tick the sensitive-household box, keep a door open so the animal can leave, and never diffuse in a closed room with a cat or a bird. If a pet seems unwell, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
